Calling all writers and literature enthusiasts — the Paris-Henry County Arts Council’s 2024 Eugene Gulish Writing Competition is underway.

“This literary competition beckons adept writers from Paris-Henry County and beyond to delve into the profound theme of ‘A Journey of Self-Discovery,’” said Caleb Grissom, executive director of the arts council.

For the event, which will feature a Feb. 16 online program, participants will find an opportunity to explore their creative depths.

In the Adult Division (age 18 and older), the competition offers a first-place prize of $100, a second-place prize of $75, a third-place prize of $50, and a Judges’ Choice award for the best overall story with a prize of $150.

For the Youth Division (ages 14-17), participants stand to win first place, which will pay $75; second place, $50; and third place, $25.

To ensure a fair competition, authors can submit up to three stories, but only one will be eligible for prize money. Entries must adhere to the theme of “A Journey of Self-Discovery,” and stories containing coarse obscenities or erotica will be disqualified.

The judging process will evaluate entries based on plot, story structure, character development, setting, grammar and sentence structure.

This competition is open to manuscripts from various counties, including Henry, Benton, Carroll, Weakley, Gibson, Dyer, Obion, Stewart, Montgomery and Houston in Tennessee, along with Calloway and Marshall counties in Kentucky.

To participate, submit your complete entry via Word document or email before the deadline at 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 16. Include the title of the manuscript, your name, permanent address, phone number and email. For youth authors, provide your parents’ or guardians’ names.

The contact information provided will be used to notify the winners.

“We eagerly anticipate the diverse and creative submissions that will take us on unique journeys of self-discovery through the art of storytelling,” Grissom said. “Join us in celebrating literature and the exploration of identity in the 2024 Eugene Gulish Writing Competition. Best of luck to all participants.”
